The Land Rover enlarges the Range Rover with the release of the Hybrid Long Wheelbase, presented in Beijing. Despite the gigantic dimensions, however, the Range Rover Hybrid LWB is the first diesel hybrid that sees the light of the Chinese market, with the average consumption being no more than 5.4 liters of diesel per 100 km. Specifically, The Land Rover argues that reducing the consumption is achieved by the hybrid system which is about 26% less compared with simple diesel version, while a similar is the reduce of emission of carbon dioxide, which is now at 169 grams per kilometer.
The Land Rover, essentially the Tata company, does not hide the fact that some of the SUVs, which were off road landmarks in Europe and the U.S. over the past decades, find fertile ground in the huge emerging middle class of Chinese free market. Indicative of the opinion for the Land Rover of the Asian market was the organization of a 16,000 km journey in the Silk Road last year in 2013 with a caravan of hybrid Range Rovers starting from the Solihull factory in Britain, crossing Europe and Asia resulting in the headquarters of Tata, Bombay, India.
The hybrid system of the Range Rover combines the 3 liter V6 diesel engine and a 35 kW electric motor that gets energy recovered from braking and produces 170 Nm of torque. The whole system, including the lithium-ion battery, weighs less than 120 pounds. The driver can select three different settings, between absolute power and absolute economy. In full electric mode, the Range Rover Hybrid LWB can move with a speed of 48 km/hr for over a mile before activating the internal combustion engine.
The total yield of the two motors reaches 340 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and torque of 700 Nm, in the range of 1,500-3,000 rpm. Transmission occurs through 8 speed automatic transmission and all wheel drive system comes from the Terrain Response. As for the size, edition Range Rover Hybrid LWB, with its large wheelbase, 18.6 cm offers extra legroom for rear passengers and a setting executive rear seat for even more space.
