Every Friday we have the appointment with classic cars that we saw in the cinema, today we are talking about a car among the most popular of the last 40 years: the Renault 5. This model was used at the beginning of this century in the U.S. film ‘The Transporter’. It’s the first film of the highly successful trilogy (the other two are called’ Transporter Extreme ‘and’ Transporter 3 ‘) and the R5 is one of the cars of the hero, the former military Frank.
The project to build the Renault 5 began in 1967, although the first official photos were released by the French company only in November 1971. A few months later, on the 3rd of January, 1972, this model was introduced, to enter the market at the end of the month. Doubts about ‘sun’ three doors were soon gone, overtaken by the beautiful line and the brilliance of engines for the new French subcompact.
It was originally pushed by the engine of 782 cm3, with 36 hp and the R5 was an immediate success in France and then spread throughout the rest of Europe (including Italy). There were a number of versions in the following months, including three sports models, of which the last (R5 Turbo 2) where the figure exceeded the 200 km / h. This vehicle remained on the market for 12 years, although it is not uncommon to see a few more on the road, even now.
