The special edition was always a smart way for companies to rebrand existing models with a different wrapper. Of course the model itself has to be able to support such a policy. The Ypsilon can and Lancia knows that. Especially the S Momodesign version we are testing, is a brand new car that can’t be called a pure supermini sports car. But let’s take things from the beginning. The Ypsilon S Momodesign is addressed in accordance with the Italians mostly to the male audience. Available in a rich palette of exterior colors and five Dual Colour combinations with matt black bonnet, tailgate, roof and mirrors that give a special touch to the Italian sports hatchback. Very successful is the combination of the blue-black shade! Details that also characterize the issue are the chrome inserts on the rear bumper, the Momodesign door frame graphics and 15 inch black alloy wheels.
Inside sporty touches are more subtle. The black dashboard and door panels, the seat covers by Graphics Momodesign, the gray stitching on the steering wheel and gear lever knob and the yellow color on the instrument readings are the elements that characterize the issue. Overall the decor is elegant and the workmanship leaves no room for complaints. This is not the case with the front seats that focus on design and comfort rather than usability. It is comfortable to hold but right body cornering. Generally, the high driving position needs improvement, since the wheel is only adjustable in height and falls a bit off. However, with minor concessions it will eventually bring the place to your feet. In the premises, four adults will travel with comfort in the five door cabin and trunk with 245 liters of capacity. And all this with a length of only 3,84 meters!
The Ypsilon S Momodesign is available with a 1.3 liter diesel engine that delivers 95 horsepower and is combined with a manual 5 speed gearbox and standard Start & Stop system. The high torque of 200 Nm at 1.500 rpm assigned and it is this that gives the snappy tempo driving the sporty Ypsilon. Surely, the 11,4 seconds communicated by the Italians for the 0-100 km/hr do not focus 100% on the shrewdness of the diesel Momodesign. If indeed you take advantage of the soft and precise selector and shift gears to 2.500 rpm, you can easily maintain a nimble pace keeping the consumption low.
While driving the Ypsilon S is pleasing. It is easily controlled and structured at high speeds and is easily controlled with the steering wheel. However, the suspension is far away from the term sport. It focuses on acquiring exemplary comfort in each bump on the road, eventually contributing to usability and quality scrolls. Ultimately, the Ypsilon Momodesign is a pleasant driving vehicle, very comfortable and easy to drive with powerful brakes.
