Why it pays to shop around for the best deal

In today’s cash-strapped world we’re always on the lookout for a bargain; the chance to get something for nothing or make our hard earned wages stretch a little further.  With day to day living costs escalating higher every year we are faced with either cutting back on some of life’s essentials, or taking a little time and effort to examine our incoming and outgoings to ensure we are being given the best deal for our household services.

Best Deals

We often assume that our current providers are already doing their very best for us, by offering their loyal customers preferential treatment and rates. But the truth is that this is seldom the case with companies doing their best to squeeze as much out of you as possible, even if it ultimately means you will leave them.

The Internet has made it easier than ever to quickly shop around to ensure you are paying as little as possible for life’s everyday essentials.

Car Insurance

I’m always amazed by how quickly a year can go, and am frequently surprised when my insurer informs me my policy is due for renewal.  Being the busy person I am it is always tempting to just keep with my current provider, but years of experience has shown me this is not financially savvy.

I now always shop around online using a car insurance comparison website to get the best deal.  It is quick and easy, and I know the system will check a number of different providers at the same time for me, saving me both time and money.

Mortgages

Shopping around for a mortgage or home loan will help you get the best financing deal.  Mortgages are products just like insurance therefore the price, terms and conditions will vary from company to company.

When searching, remember to compare interest rates, fees and features.  You could potentially save thousands of dollars in interest, or take advantage of improved features offered by another provider.

Energy Bills

To make sure you are getting the best deal for your energy, you should regularly compare your contract with new ones available.  It’s also worth contacting your current supplier, as they may be able to offer you a better deal than you already have if they sense that you might cancel.

Remember to check the following before switching:

  • Tariff rates including the unit price you will pay in cents.
  • Ensure all fees are included.
  • Discounts and rebates you may be entitled to.
  • Length of contract your signing up to.
  • Is there a cooling off period?
  • Options for renewable energy customers.

Personal Loans

Savvy borrowers will always be on the lookout for the best personal loan deal or refinance an old debt. Interest rates for borrowing have remained high because lenders are increasingly worried about the credit risks they take on, but you may still be able to improve the deal you currently have.

Vacations

There are now literally hundreds of holiday and tour operators desperate for your business, and consequently offering some amazing deals.  Booking a package deal may be the best option for you, but you should also consider booking each element of the vacation separately as this could save you hundreds of dollars.

The timing of your booking can also have a serious impact on the final amount you will pay.  As a general rule, the later you book the cheaper the vacation is likely to be.  But this might mean a more limited choice so if you can’t book late, book as early as possible instead.
