Driving the new Subaru WRX

The new WRX is something of a confession from the same Subaru that in recent years somewhere lost the essence of the model and now wants to show us that it’s still here. The first thing that was improved in the new Subaru WRX is the torsional rigidity of the body, which is 41% stiffer than its predecessor. Also has hardened and springs by 39% front and 62%, with the obvious aim of achieving more direct and sharp response. Aiming at a much more rigid chassis, Subaru decided that the new WRX will be available only as a sedan. Clearly it is frustrating to the visual effect and practicality in relation to the 5 door model, but the other more advantageous to rigidity. The 2liter turbo engine are essentially a variant of the 2liter atmospheric wearing Subaru BRZ and Toyota GT86, double injection, 10,6:1 compression ratio and variable valve timing. The 35,7 kgm torque is available from 2,000 up to 5.200 rpm, while the Subaru announced that the new WRX consumes 25% less fuel than the previous engine of 2.5 liters.

It is also available the CVT transmission with paddles on the steering wheel. Of course the manual gearbox with 6’s traditional mechanical handbrake also fit much more with the character of the car and the racing origins. Also important is that the system stability can be completely deactivated quickly and easily. The many fanatical followers of the WRX will surely be happy to learn that even a first few meters behind the wheel, the sense of focused simplicity is intense. In principle this almost forgotten feeling of turning a traditional ignition key and bring to life the dry crackle of flat 4 cylinder. It is also not absolutely have no choice between driving programs, normal, sport and other such postmodern. Simply put forward the WRX and go. The new 2liter turbocharged engine which nestles into the classical and rigid bodywork, initially shows a sufficiently strong and most importantly, has minimal lag. A unique weaknesses is an excessive sensitivity of the boost control in a little throttle and power shortage expected over the 6.000 rpm.

On the road we collected immediately increased body rigidity. The steering is precise with his impressive comeback for sensing electrical rack and pinion. It is obvious that Subaru has used the lessons from the development of the BRZ. Realize multiple springs, but the shock to compensate well regulated satisfactorily. Not top ride quality, but given the nature of the car, it is quite good. The important thing is that the combination of turbo motors with the properly rigged suspension forces you to pressure ever more. And the more you seek boundary at the beginning really impressed by its neutrality. Then, however, you realize that the behavior of the car remains slightly involutional. And this WRX has freely front and rear differentials, and the more you push it, it gets clear that the placement with the throttle is difficult. Mostly you hear the inside wheel spinning.

In the cabin the upgraded touches obvious, despite any traditional design stickiness of Subaru. The central information display is LCD 4,3 inch and controls almost all operating systems of the car, between which and the boost pressure of the turbocharger. Very beautiful and functional is the steering, although we continue to believe that a round is preferable to fashion chamfered. The cloth seats are comfortable and yet have very good support in all parts of the body. The only drawback is this relative indifference to attention to detail and hard plastics, which do show opposite inferior to German competitors.
